The Route of the Wachau Valley Tour

We start the Wachau Valley Tour in the medieval town of Melk after a brief visit to the baroque monastary of Melk Abbey and it’s baroque garden in particular. Driving on the south bank of the Danube in the direction of Mautern we pass the palace in Schönbühel where we stop for a photo. We continue on the road to Mautern as far as Aggstein where we drive up to the castle ruins of Aggstein. The ruins of Aggstein Castle, 320 metres above the Danube on a 150-metre-long rocky promontory that slopes steeply down on three sides, is the first castle in the Wachau Valley.

The ruins of Aggstein Castle are an elongated twin castle, narrow from east to west and adapted to the terrain, that from the 12th to the beginning of the 15th century, Aggstein Castle was owned by the Kuenringers, an Austrian ministerial family. In the first half of the 15th century, Jörg Scheck von Wald, a councillor and captain of Duke Albrecht V of Habsburg, was enfeoffed with Aggstein Castle. He rebuilt the castle between 1429 and 1436. The present substance of the Aggstein castle ruins still originates mainly from this reconstruction in the 15th century.

From the ruins of Aggstein Castle we drive to Göttweig Abbey, which dominates the landscape south of Krems on the Danube since it is situated on a mountain plateau, which was already settled in prehistoric times.

This location of Göttweig Abbey at the transition from the Wachau Valley to the Krems Basin is visible from everywhere, even from far away. Göttweig Abbey is a spacious Baroque complex with 3 corner towers, dating back in part to the Middle Ages, and, like Melk Abbey, is inhabited by Benedectine monks.

From Göttweig Abbey we head to Dürnstein on the north side of the Danube in the Wachau Valley. The medieval town of Dürnstein is situated on a rock above the Danube. 150 m above the old town there is the castle ruins of Dürnstein where Richard the Lionheart was kept around Christmas 1192 after he was captivated in Vienna on his way back from the crusade.
