This Vineyard Walking Route starts in Spitz on the Danube at the church square. From there we go north on the „Rote Torgasse“ towards the Rotes Tor. At the end of the settlement area of Spitz we cross Axpoint vineyard which is located on the foot of the steep sloped Singerriedel vineyard. On the path on the foot of the Singerriedel vineyard we continue northwards up to the Red Gate.
The Red Gate
The Red Gate, located above the church settlement of Spitz on the Danube, represents a remnant of the former market fortifications of Spitz. From the Red Gate, the defence line stretched north into the forest and south over the ridge of the Singerriedel. During the last years of the Thirty Years’ War, 1618-1648, when Swedish troops were moving through Bohemia towards Vienna, they advanced to the Red Gate.
The Picnic
With a view of Spitz, we enjoy a picnic on the upper edge of the Singerriedel vineyard south of the Red Gate. We drink Grüner Veltliner Smaragd and Riesling Smaragd from the Singerriedel vineyard where we sit. The wine is accompanied by cheese from a local organic cheese dairy and Wachau sausage from a local butcher together with homemade bread rolls.

The Singerriedl vineyard in Spitz on the Danube is one of the best vineyards in the Wachau Valley. The ridge of the Singerriedel stretches from the Red Gate in a slightly south-easterly direction to the Danube with the Singerriedel vineyard on the steep south-west facing slope of the ridge characterised by narrow terraces, dry stone walls and an average slope of 50%. Green Veltliner and Riesling wine of the highest quality is pressed in the cellars of renowned Spitzer winegrowers from the grapes of this slope. The soil of the Singerriedel vineyard is composed of paragneiss, one of the most common rock types in the Wachau Valley. Paragneisses are produced by the transformation of sedimentary rocks and consist of quartz, feldspar and mica-rich rocks.
Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are white wine varieties. Grüner Veltliner is an autochthonous grape variety from Lower Austria and the most widespread grape variety in Austria due to a strong spread of the grape variety in the 18th and 19th century because of its good growing characteristics. Riesling is an old grape variety that was probably selected from wild vines along the Rhine. Riesling produces top qualities in Austria along the Danube with fruity stone fruit notes, piquant acidity and mineral spiciness.
