We enter Český Krumlov from the north through the Budweiser Gate, the last of nine city gates still standing, and walk along Latrán Street through the historic district where, over the centuries, castle servants, artisans, merchants, and artists—who were responsible for the smooth operation of the castle above—lived.

Český Krumlov Castle evolved from a fortress built around 1240 by the Witigons, which was situated above a ford on a long, high rocky outcrop flanked by the Vltava River to the south and the Polečnice River to the north.
The seven-hectare castle grounds feature five courtyards and the castle garden. Throughout the complex, valuable Renaissance and Baroque rooms and halls such as the Masquerade Hall have been preserved.

The Masquerade Hall of the Rosenberg’s in Český Krumlov Castle is a magnificent baroque dance hall from 1748 where 135 life-sized painted characters indulge in playful carnival entertainment. All characters are sculpted, casting their own shadow, conversing, and appear as they were leaning out of the wall.

The terrain of the park rises in a southwesterly direction through the terraces, the lower parterre and upper park towards the far end of the park where it gradually passes into open country.
