Weißenkirchen is the largest wine-growing municipality in the Wachau Valley, whose inhabitants live mainly from viticulture. In the Weißenkirchen area there are the best and most famous Riesling sites. These include the Achleiten and Klaus vineyards.
Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are white wine varieties. Grüner Veltliner is an autochthonous grape variety from Lower Austria and the most widespread grape variety in Austria due to a strong spread of the grape variety in the 18th and 19th century because of its good growing characteristics. Riesling is an old grape variety that was probably selected from wild vines along the Rhine. Riesling produces top qualities in Austria along the Danube with fruity stone fruit notes, piquant acidity and mineral spiciness.
Federspiel® and Smaragd® are registered trademarks of Vinea Wachau, an association founded 40 years ago by Wachau vintners. Federspiel is a classic dry wine with an alcoholic strength by volume of between 11,5 and 12,5 % vol. that is distinguished by a strong, nuance-rich character. Smaragd is a brand that stands for the highest quality level of wines from Wachau valley vintners with an alcoholic strength by volume of 12,5 % or higher. The grapes for the Smaragd wines ripen in the best vineyard sites of the Wachau valley. They are harvested late and are true representatives of their terroir. The powerful wines are concentrated, complex and very long-lived.

The two terraced Weißenkirchen vineyards of Achleiten and Klaus rise steeply from the Danube for about 100 metres, with the Klaus vineyard facing southeast and the Achleiten vineyard winding around the foothills of the Weitenberg from southeast to west.
The Klaus Vineyard
The Klaus vineyard produces a fruity, crisp Grüner Veltliner, the typical “Wachau wine” with a noticeable and invigorating minerality and a dry, aromatic Riesling that displays flowery aromas as well as high acidity. Sheep cheese goes well with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, respectively.
The Achleiten Vineyard
The Achleiten vineyard produces a Grüner Veltliner smaragd with aromas of ripe yellow apple and with delicate dark minerality and a Riesling smaragd with fragrant-attractive bouquet, juicy, fine fruit sweetness and lemony-mineral on the finish. Gouda cheese goes well with Grüner Veltliner Smaragd and Riesling Smaragd from Achleiten vineyard, respectively.
